Machine-made Buratto Lace

buratto 1. (bue raht toe). Filet type of lace, with two lengthwise threads to each crosswise thread. Design is worked in after ground is woven. Dates back to 16th century. Used chiefly for church and table decorations. Many good machine imitations.

carnival or carnaval 1. Type of reticella lace, having heraldic patterns distinctive of owner. Part of trousseau of 16th century brides in Italy, Spain, France; worn afterwards on state occasions. Same as BRIDAL LACE.
